The Story of March Bracelets

The tradition of Martis/Mαρτης (derived from the Greek word for March) is said to date back to Ancient Greek times, as a way to usher in the transition from winter to spring. Participants of the springtime Eleusinian Mysteries, highly secretive religious rituals dedicated to the worship of Demeter and Persephone, would tie strings around their feet and hands.

Today we honor this tradition by tying a bracelet of red and white string onto our wrists March 1st. It is believed that doing so will help prevent your skin from burning in the new springtime sun. The red string represents sun-kissed cheeks, and the white string, purity. We add an evil eye charm to our March Bracelets to bring the wearer good luck.

These bracelets aren’t made to be worn forever, but you can keep it on as long as you’d like! In some regions of Greece, March Bracelets are removed on May Day and thrown into bonfires. In other regions, the bracelets are removed at the end of March and tied to a tree branch in hopes that a bird will use it to make its nest. However long you decide to wear yours, it’s a fun way to keep this ancient custom alive.
